CFO Studio Magazine with David Huber

4th QUARTER 2012 WWW.CFOSTUDIO.COM 5 I n a recent conversation about CFO Studio and General Counsel Studio , an executive asked me a question, in a tongue-in-cheek manner, that surprised me: “With all you’re doing to pro- mote CFOs and general counsels, are you still in the real estate business?” When that executive asked me this ques- tion, he did so with a broad smile that said: “I’m just busting your chops.” Given my 28+ years in corporate real estate and my two years in media, I took his question as a compliment. Interestingly, my answer may surprise you. I’ve always been in the client business, deploying real estate merely as a catalyst to achieve clients’ broader business objectives. So, I’ve never really seen myself as being in the real estate business in the traditional sense. In fact, many of our competitors would agree with that statement. For corporate occupants — the only entities Real Estate Strategies Corporation serves —we’ve always viewed real estate as a vehicle for our clients to achieve growth and profits. As a result, we see our role as aligning our clients’ leased and owned real estate in a manner that will mitigate risk, reduce cost, increase flexibility, and support exit strate- gies. Accordingly, we view our core business as utilizing real estate to serve our clients and accomplish their more important objectives. CFO Studio and General Counsel Studio have served Real Estate Strategies Corporation exceptionally well in providing vehicles to promote CFOs and general counsels at New Jersey- and New York-area companies — the very same people we seek to serve — as business and strategy thought lead- ers. So, are we still in the real estate business? Is our opening an office in Manhattan this month to serve our growing business there any indication? Let’s just say that we are still in the same business in which we’ve always been. This issue of CFO Studio Magazine is an exciting one! The cover story on Dave Huber and the PPACA is timely, as are the articles written by our columnists, Aldonna Ambler and Cindy Kraft, contributors Michael Hadj- iloucas and Emmalee MacDonald and CFOs Bert Marchio and Andrew Savadelis. The October CFO Studio Reception honoring Barry Rowan was a real blast. We expect to raise the roof at the CFO Studio Reception honoring Huber on November 28th. On an equally important note, by now, the presidential election has been decided and we know who will lead the United States during the next four years ... Heaven help us! I look to the day when presidential elections will no longer be about the least bad candidate or the one who will do less damage, but rather, about two, or even three, highly qualified, exciting and dynamic leaders, any one of whomwould be great for America. Some suggest that the next New Jersey Gubernatorial election will be like that, between current Governor Chris Christie and Newark Mayor Cory Booker. Now, that sounds like an exciting competition!
