3rd Quarter 2012
CFO STUDIO
RECEPTION
o
n a warm spring evening, the
pleasant sound of many lively
conversations arose and merged
as new Jersey financial executives
gathered may 16, 2012, at vine
restaurant in basking ridge. The
reception introduced the q1 issue of
CFO Studio Magazine
and honored
the cover subject, davidWyshner,
global Cfo of avis budget group.
The host, andrew Zezas, publisher
of
CFO Studio
, introducedWyshner,
who delivered remarks that appear
here as an edited transcript:
“in the Cfo role it is really easy
to get distracted by other stuff. you
can end up using too much of your
time, too many of your organization’s
resources, too much of your organi-
zation’s limited ability to get things
done on non-strategic issues. This
can happen for a variety of reasons:
because the other issues are right in
front of you, because they’re easier to
tackle, because your organization has
been set up this way. being distracted
from tackling strategic issues can be
a real problem, both for the company
and for a Cfo.
“if a Cfo isn’t thinking about his or
her business’s current and future strate-
gic position, then the Cfo isn’t really
doing his or her job. While that may
sound depressing, the flip side actually
is quite encouraging. With the invest-
ment of the right amount of time, the
Cfo absolutely can be and should be
a significant positive force for strategic
thinking in his or her company.
“a Cfo generally can bring an
extremely beneficial understanding
of how elements of the business fit
together, knowledge of the financial
implications of decisions that are
made, ability to work with other
members of the team to ensure that
the company is focused on growing
shareholder value, and by doing all
those things, have the ability to drive
change in the organization. This
combination of skills and under-
standing arguably puts the Cfo in
a unique position to help his or her
organization move forward. it’s part
of what i find fun and challenging
about what i do for a living.”
